Robert Altman - Short Cuts (1993)

Ciudad de ángeles/Vidas cruzadas

Adaptación de varios relatos del escritor norteamericano Raymond Carver (1939-1988). Retrato de la vida cotidiana de un grupo muy heterogéneo de personas que viven en Los Ángeles e intentan afrontar como pueden las dificultades de su vida laboral y personal, gentes que se cruzan indiferentes ignorando los dramas ajenos. Sin embargo, en medio de tanta cotidianeidad, late la presencia del terror.

Robert Altman stunningly interweaves 22 characters and nine Raymond Carver short stories -- relocating the settings from Carver's Northwest to Los Angeles during a spraying of malathion brought on by a Medfly epidemic. Altman intercuts tales of disconnection and emotional emptiness. The stories concern variations upon the theme of Los Angeles angst --a happily married couple, Ann (Andie MacDowell) and Howard Finnigan (Bruce Davison) have to deal with the deep emotions felt when their child is struck by a car before his birthday and lapses into a coma, while the baker (Lyle Lovett) of their child's neglected birthday cake sinks into a rage and torments them in their grief. Three men (Fred Ward, Buck Henry and Huey Lewis) leave on a much anticipated fishing trip, only to discover the drowned body of a nude woman floating in the river and decide to finish their fishing trip and ignore the corpse.

A Los Angeles cop (Tim Robbins) uses his badge as an excuse to cheat on his wife (Madeleine Stowe). A pool cleaner (Chris Penn) resents his wife (Jennifer Jason Leigh) for her part-time job as a phone sex performer. A waitress (Lily Tomlin) is devoted to her limousine driver husband (Tom Waits), who is loving and concerned as long as he is sober. An irate husband (Peter Gallagher) decides to divide up his estranged wife's property in a unique way. A lonely woman (Lori Singer) who's a successful cellist wants to form a connection with her alcoholic mother (Annie Ross), a local jazz singer. A couple (Fred Ward and Anne Archer) is invited to dinner for the first time with two embittered spouses (Matthew Modine and Julianne Moore). Altman weaves the characters into an interconnected tapestry that exposes the shallow lives of this self-centered group of Californians.

Carl Theodor Dreyer - Vampyr - Der Traum des Allan Grey (1932)

Vampyr/La bruja vampiro

El guión es una adaptación, aunque muy libre, del Carmille de Le Fanu. El protagonista es Allan Gray, un joven, estudiante de ciencias ocultas, que viajando por la campiña francesa llega hasta la aldea de Courtempierre, en cuyas cercanías hay un castillo. Pronto empieza a ver cosas extrañas. Por ejemplo; como la sombra de un soldado moviéndose independientemente de éste, o las sombras que se proyectan en las paredes sin que aparentemente haya nadie que las proyecte.

Durante su estancia el señor del castillo visita a Allen y le deja un paquete que no debe abrir hasta después de su muerte. Poco después el viejo señor muere asesinado. Una de las hijas de éste, Léone, sufre de una extraña anemia. Allan abre el paquete. Su contenido es un viejo y misterioso libro sobre los no muertos que va leyendo a lo largo de las escenas siguientes, enterándose así de las diabólicas actividades de los vampiros...

Dreyer hace un uso magistral de la luz y de las sombras y crea un efecto de niebla que le da al film un toque fantástico y onírico con el sencillo truco de colocar una gasa delante de la cámara. Esto lo llevó a cabo al ver con agrado como quedaba la película desenfocada tras un accidente involuntario. La carga simbólica también es importante. El color blanco, que se usa mucho a lo largo del film, representa la ausencia de sangre. Todo el interés de Dreyer se centró en crear una atmósfera muy especial.

Pese a que hoy la película está considerada como una obra maestra en su época se la consideró muy mala desde el punto de vista artístico. Las productoras recortaron la película y añadieron muchos diálogos a la misma, que originalmente carecía de ellos de modo intencional. El fracaso fue tal que Dreyer no pudo rodar otra película hasta 10 años después. ~~> Texto tomado de La Cripta

Yet the result—concerning an occult student assailed by various supernatural haunts and local evildoers in a village outside Paris—is nearly unclassifiable, a host of stunning camera and editing tricks and densely layered sounds creating a mood of dreamlike terror. With its roiling fogs, ominous scythes, and foreboding echoes, Vampyr is one of cinema's great nightmares.

Documental ficticio sobre una banda de rock ficticia. ¿Qué más se puede agregar a la sinopsis?

Tal vez algún seguidor de la serie Better Call Saul pueda distinguir al rubio.

No puede faltar en ninguna mesa de saldos. Tiene más de treinta años y sigue siendo muy graciosa. Eso sí, para apreciar la banda de sonido hay que subir la perilla de volumen a la marca de "11".

Érase una vez un mirlo cantor

Gia Agladze toca los timbales en una orquesta, pero tiene la fastidiosa manía de llegar tarde a ensayos y conciertos: ¡siempre aparece escasos segundos antes de su intervención! Gia se niega a estar esperando sin hacer nada, sentado entre el resto de músicos, a que llegue el momento de aporrear los parches: prefiere invertir este tiempo en ligar con chicas que se encuentra por la calle, aunque tampoco es que en este campo las cosas le vayan especialmente bien...

El protagonista de Erase una vez un mirlo cantor no debe tener más de 25 años. Toca los timbales en una orquesta de Tbilisi, Georgia, pero como debe pasar alrededor de una hora inactivo ya que su participación ocurre solamente al principio y al final, se va mientras la ejecución de la pieza no lo precisa, y eso le trae problemas con los superiores, que no sólo son artistas sino también funcionarios del estado soviético. Pero el discurso político no ocupa el primer plano aquí. La crítica a la burocracia es burlona y prefiere centrarse en el absurdo de las reglamentaciones, método elíptico de disentir que atraviesa buena parte del cine de Europa del Este de esta época. El protagonista cumple con sus obligaciones, pero no permite que la rigidez normativa lo coagule. Y así es que se la pasa yendo y viniendo de un lado a otro, intentando levantarse a todas las chicas con las que se cruza, dejándose llevar por los amigos de fiesta en fiesta, comiendo, cantando y paseando. Once lived a song-thrush

Iko shashvi mgalobeli depicts 36 hours in the life of the young musician Gia, who plays the drums in the Tbilisi orchestra, and is defined as much by his friendliness as his frequent lateness. He seems to be more interested in spontaneous human contact than work. He is a dreamer who refuses to adapt and seems incapable of finding a relation to time that tallies with his environment. The film, which was shot entirely in real locations and features mostly amateurs from Iosseliani’s circle of friends, recalls the French Nouvelle Vague as well as the Czech New Wave.

John Michael McDonagh - Calvary (2014)

En un pequeño pueblo irlandés, en el confesionario de una iglesia, el cura escucha a uno de sus habituales parroquianos. Este le revela un secreto que jamás contó. De niño era abusado por un sacerdote, semana tras semana durante años y años. Y por ello ha madurado una decisión. Matar. Matar a un cura. Pero no al cura pedófilo, que ya ha muerto, sino a quien lo escucha, al padre James, un buen tipo que no sabe cómo tomarse la amenaza de este hombre misterioso que le dará una semana para poner sus cosas en orden, antes de la planeada ejecución. No hace falta creer en Dios para disfrutar de este dramón de conciencia, que se ve más que contrapesado por un afilado, certero sentido del humor, por un elenco notable y, finalmente, por una construcción clásica que remite a John Ford. ~~> Horacio Bernades

Un poco obvia para mi gusto (la misma razón por la que en general evito a Ken Loach),

pero le guardo cierta simpatía por haberle hecho los subtítulos

desde el audio para unos amigos y por lo carismático que es el actor principal.

Calvary's Father James (Brendan Gleeson) is a good priest who is faced with troubling circumstances brought about by a mysterious member of his parish. Although he continues to comfort his own fragile daughter and reach out to help members of his church with their various scurrilous moral - and often comic - problems, he feels sinister forces closing in, and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.

The Adalen Riots

Flushed with the success of his Elvira Madigan, Swedish director Bo Widerberg concocted another story of teenaged love juxtaposed with social upheaval in Adalen 31. The title refers to the 1931 worker's strike against the Adalen paper mill in Northern Sweden. As the strikers debate whether or not to use violence in pressing their complaint, the daughter of the factory owner (Marie De Geer) is impregnated by the son of a worker (Peter Schildt). The strike is "resolved" in a bloody confrontation between the laborers and government troops, resulting in several deaths--and, on a greater scale, the collapse of Sweden's Conservative Government.
