Billy vive en un mundo paralelo, Ambrosia, en el que él es un héroe y todo sale a la perfección. En realidad trabaja en una funeraria y es un desastre en el terreno sentimental, o no, un desastre no. Digamos que está confuso. Está  comprometido con dos chicas, pero quién le tiene fascinado es la soñadora Liz (Julie Christie). Billy lo promete todo y no cumple nada, anda demasiado ocupado escapándose de la realidad que lo rodea. Sus fantasías le ayudarán a hacer más llevadero el triste escenario que es la vida de la clase trabajadora de la Inglaterra del Norte, pero se convierten en su propia condena, cuando sus cercanos reparan en ello y comienzan a desconfiar de su integridad. Billy Fisher (Courtenay) lives with his parents and works for scornful undertaker Shadrack (Rossiter). To alleviate the spirit-crushing tedium of his rigidly confined life he constructs an elaborate web of lies, principally that he's a budding screenwriter. His runaway mouth has also got him engaged to three different women: homely Barbara, (Fraser) shrewish Rita (Watts) and proto-hippie chick Liz (Christie). His one hope for escape is that he might sell a script to comedian Danny Boon (Randall). But when a genuine opportunity to get away presents itself, Billy bottles it and retreats back into a world of fantasy.
