Un grupo de soldados, todos encantados con la idea de ir al frente y de regresar cubiertos de gloria, parte para la guerra. El infierno de las trincheras enfría poco después el ardor juvenil de los protagonistas y el fango de las botas y los gusanos que se encuentran en el plato no sirven de mucho para mejorar la moral, al tiempo que en la retaguardia no viven sino traiciones y decepciones. La muerte diezma al grupo y se lleva a todos salvo a aquel que estaba predestinado a rendir cuentas ante la historia.

Wooden Crosses

Set during WWI, the story concentrates on a handful of French draftees, including an idealistic student named Demachy. Marching off to war with joyful patriotic fervor, the men are quickly disillusioned by the appalling realities of total warfare. When they aren't enduring ten nonstop days of enemy bombardment, the soldiers must sweat out the horrible realization that their trenches are being mined from underground. Nor are they given any relief during those rare lulls in fighting. At one point, the men are yanked away from a much-needed furlough to march in a victory parade for the entertainment of their callous, fat-cat superior officers. One by one, the men are killed off, until only Demachy remains - but, tragically, not for long.

1915. Etudiant en droit engagé volontaire, Gilbert Demachy rejoint le 39e régiment d'infanterie, immobilisé quelque part dans les plaines de Champagne. Là, il est affecté dans l'escouade du caporal Bréval, où il essuie l'ironie de quelques 'anciens' mais sympathise rapidement avec Sulphart, un colosse bougon, Fouillard, un paysan enjoué, l'ouvrier Vieublé et le cuistot Bouffioux. Il monte bientôt au front avec ses nouveaux amis et fait, dès la première nuit, son baptème du feu en participant à une patrouille.
