Algo parecido a la felicidad

En una pequeña ciudad industrial checa sin nombre, varios amigos que viven en el mismo edificio ruinoso luchan con la dura realidad de una vida hundida en la pobreza. El novio de Monika, antes de emigrar a Estados Unidos, prometió que le mandaría un billete para que se uniera a él. Para la madre de Monika, ese novio es la única posibilidad de que su hija tenga una vida mejor y pueda salir de una situación doméstica sin esperanza empeorada por el desempleo y el alcoholismo de su marido. Pero alguien se interpone entre un futuro mejor y Monika: su promiscua amiga Dasha, madre de dos pequeños, que ya no puede hacer frente a su condición cada vez más desesperada. Monika se siente responsable por su amiga y sus hijos, como también se siente Tonik , un amigo que vive sin dinero en la ruinosa granja de su infancia y que siente algo más que amistad por Monika.

Something Like Happiness

Set in a bleak Bohemian town, liberally scattered with broken down cars and half-ruined industrial installations, this sympathetic, affecting drama outlines the unorthodox love affair of two fellow apartment block residents (Tonik and Monika), thrown together by their friendship with a third, the mentally unstable Dasa (Geislerová). Liska is excellent as the gentle Tonik who matches the betrothed Monika in selflessness as they share the burden of looking after Dasa two young children as Dasa’s behaviour deteriorates. Writer/director Sláma shows considerable adeptness in tonal control, melding quite seamlessly the social and emotional concerns of his observant script.
