Tom Stoppard debutó como director adaptando su propia obra de teatro al cine. El resultado fue ejemplar ya que la película se disfruta del primer minuto al último y se hizo meritoriamente con el León de oro en Venecia.

Tremendamente divertida y original, llena de diálogos absurdos y situaciones surrealistas. La verborrea de los protagonistas no tiene precio, sobretodo cuando se ponen a jugar a "preguntas y respuestas". Para representar a los singulares personajes de Rosencrantz y Guildenstern nadie mejor que los británicos Gary Oldman y Tim Roth (muy amigos en la vida real) quienes ya habían trabajado juntos con gran éxito en los teatros londinenses. Ambos clavan sus papeles y dan un recital inolvidable.

Tom Stoppard delivers a tale of Shakespearean origin from a skewed and unexpected perspective. It's the perspective of two relatively minor characters from Hamlet, Rosencrantz (Gary Oldman) and Guildenstern (Tim Roth), courtiers who, in the original play, were dispatched offstage before the narrative's conclusion. In Stoppard's script (which he also directed), the two supporting players take center stage as the events unfold in Elsinore Castle. Unable to determine the source of the prince's tortured despair, the duo ponders the question of fate as their predetermined roles are played out. Meanwhile, they dabble in a little verbal tennis and some ill-advised science experiments, and endure the puzzling attentions of mysterious wandering thespians led by (Richard Dreyfuss). Ordered to accompany Hamlet (Iain Glen) to England, the pair learn that the letter they carry instructs that nation's king to decapitate their mentally unbalanced and irksome charge, a revelation that Hamlet overhears.

Rosencrantz et Guildenstern, deux amis d'enfance du Prince Hamlet, sont convoqués à la cour du Danemark par le roi Claudius inquiet du comportement de son fils Hamlet.

Le film met en scène deux personnages secondaires de la tragédie "Hamlet" de Shakespeare et leur fait vivre le drame d'Elsener, entrelaçant les scènes capitale du test shakespearien avec les discours métaphysiques sur le libre-arbitre de Rosencrantz et Guildenstern. Avec beaucoup d'humour et de finesse, Tom Stoppard retravaille ce matériau à la lumière des interrogations contemporaines sur la destinée et sur notre fin inéluctable, sur la nature de la représentation théâtrale et sa portée philosophique. "Rosencrantz et Guildenstern sont morts" révèle un arrière-fond des plus féroces.
